A Prayer for the Devil

Owen Meany continues to prove to me that he is not a "Christ Figure". As this story progresses Owen evolves from a sweet funny little guy to a lazy student at the University of New Hampshire. He is losing the atom size of respect that I had for him. Even when John had to send his first Christmas away from his mother all Owen could think about was him not going to Sawyer Depot. (p.147) In chapter 6, when Owen confronts Mitzy Lish and and speaks to her in a derogatory way. He acted only off of his emotions when he spoke to her. I honestly can not wait for his "death date".

  1. Yes,this is true, for it says it in the book. But, what about all the good Owen has done, helping with the plays, repeating ninth grade in order to keep his promise to Johnny's mom, (the one about always helping Johnny with his homework) and helping Johnny look for his father. Owen has done so much good as well, it doesn't seem fair to call him "the Devil."

  2. Yes, those aree true facts about Owen Meany. However, he continues to overshadow those events with what is happening in the story now. He has gone into sexual activities, smoking, war, and he recently severed his finger from his hand. Speaking of this, why did he choose the right hand, which is Johnny's dominant hand? The guidelines of the war state that it can either be the left or right hand.Owen also said "THEN IT OUGHT TO BE THE RIGHT INDEX FINGER-JUST TO BE SAFE..."(Irving p.507) What is Owen trying to be safe about? To me it seems like he is looking out for himself.

  3. This is a very emotional piece, but that is not what you are suppose to be connectiong to. Take out your emotions and thoughts and give facts and your meaning for them. Also don't add your personal connections toward the character you are refering to.

  4. You have to take into consideration why Owen Meany is being lazy and slacking off. He did say that he was sent by God to fulfill an assignment. If the assignment was just to kill Tabitha, Owen Meany wouldn't be such a round character in the story. He also had to save the Vietnamese children in war. He knew that was what he was destined to do, there was no other option for him. He led many to their death, and eventually he would have to die too. Throughout the story However, Owen was continually giving hints how he was a christ figure; He looked like an angel descending from heaven, he felt like God's apprentice, he had disciples, He had a Mary Magdalene, and a Joseph and so forth. Christ was a hero, he sacrificed himself for him people, and even after that he forgave them. The same thing for Owen, that task was his reason to live. So I disagree with you, Owen was a weak Christ figure at first, but evolved into a stronger one as the story progressed, but he was never the devil.(Unless there is evidence that he had a confrontation with himself).
